Starting October 12, 2025, a new border control system, the Entry/Exit System (EES), will be introduced in EU and Schengen countries. It will completely replace passport stamps and introduce electronic entry and exit registration for citizens of non-EU/Schengen countries.
How will EES work?
When you first enter the EU, the border guard will enter the following data into the system:
biometric data (fingerprints and photos),
passport details,
date and place of entry.
This data will be stored in a central EU database for up to three years. The system will then automatically check traveler status each time they cross the border.
What will change for travelers?
stamps in passports are cancelled,
biometric registration is being introduced,
the system will automatically count 90 days within 180,
Overstaying will be recorded immediately.
Where will the system operate?
The EES applies to all EU and Schengen countries except Cyprus and Ireland, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
What to look for?
If you're planning a trip in October, be aware of potential queues at passport control. Also, check in advance how many days (90/180) you have left to stay.
🤝 We'll be keeping a close eye on all the changes and be the first to tell you ❤️
